Flash reprogramming is an important part of repairs and tune-ups on most 1996 and newer cars. Many times, reprogramming is the only way to repair a vehicle and eliminate false "Check Engine Soon" lights or MIL indicators, and will often fix engine and transmission problems that are not caused by mechanical issues. Vehicle manufacturers are constantly updating the firmware used in their automotive computers, and it's up to you to make sure your vehicle is running the most current firmware available. Many dealerships now use flash reprogramming as the first step for any vehicle diagnostics, and charge anywhere from $80 up to $200 for the procedure.
